This week we have been learning what plants need to grow. Next week we will learn about how water is transported around a plant.

 

RE

This week we have learnt about the Jewish festival, Passover. Next week we will learn more about Jewish living.

 

Geography

This week we have learnt about how farming affects our food and which countries produce the most food. Next week we will learn about sheep shearing in Wales.

This week we have been learning how to write instructions for making a tuna, mayonnaise and cucumber sandwich. We used imperative (bossy) verbs and time connectives. Next week we will be focusing on paragraphs.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning about parallel and perpendicular lines and recognising 2D shapes through their angles and lines. Next week we will be recognising and constructing 3D shapes and beginning to measure mass. 

We have also been learning how to find a unit and non-unit fraction of objects. Next week we will be learning about equivalent fractions.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about the parts of a flower and had a look at the parts by dissecting a flower. Next week we will focus on what plants need to grow.

 

RE

This week we have been learning about objects that hold special memories to Jewish people, we then had a go at making matzos! Next week we will learn more about Passover.

 

Geography

This week we have been learning about how farming has changed the landscape. Next week we will learn about how the food we eat effects farming.

 

History

This week we have been learning about the legend of the Trojan horse.

This week we have been learning when and how to use paragraphs in our writing. Next week we will be learning how to write instructions.

 

Maths

We have been learning about turns and angles, learning about what an angle is and what a right angle, obtuse angle and acute angle is. We have also been learning about tenths, how to count in tenths and write tenths in decimal form. Next week we will be learning about horizontal, vertical, perpendicular and parallel lines and finding fractions of objects.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about the 5 main parts of a plant and  created some 3D plants and labelled them. Next week we will be learning more about parts of a flower.

 

RE

This week we have been exploring the idea of covenant through stories about Abraham in the Torah. Next week we will be exploring objects that hold importance to Jewish people.

 

Geography

This week we have begun our learning on agriculture and farming by learning about what the word 'agriculture' means and the three types of farming: arable, pastoral and mixed. Next week we will learn how farming has changed the landscape.

This week we have been revising our SPAG knowledge. Next week we will be learning about paragraphs.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to compare duration and find start and end times. We have also been dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using exchanging and remainders. Next week we will begin learning about fractions and shape.

 

Science

This week we have written what we know already about plants and what we want to find out. Next week we will be learning about the parts of a plant.

 

RE

This week we have begun our topic on Judaism, learning about the importance of the story of Noah and the mezuzah. Next week we will be exploring the stories of Abraham.

 

Geography

We have started the new term off with an amazing visit from South Brockwells farm. This links to our  topic this term: Agriculture and farming. We were visited by sheep, goats and even a pony! We learnt about the farm and the work they do there to care for the animals. We then got to groom the pony and even take the sheep and goat for a walk!

 

History

This week we have been learning about Greek theatre.

This week we have been learning about the Queen's reign between 1982-1991 in celebration of the upcoming Platinum Jubilee!

This week we finished our learning of forces and magnets by making a game usnig a magnet! Next term we will be learning about plants.

 

RE

This week we finished our learning of the Kingdom of God by writing about the fruits of the spirits and how we can apply these in everyday life. Next term we will be learning about Judaism.

 

Geography

This week we have finished our learning of settlements by learning about London and Cardiff. Next term we will be learning about Agriculture and farming.

 

History

We will continue learning about Ancient Greece next term.

This week we have been learning about play scripts and how to write them. We have been using the myth King Midas to help us. Next week our learning will be focused around the upcoming Jubilee!

 

Maths

We have been learning about the 24 hours clock, next week we will be learning about duration. We have also been learning hot to multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number without exchanging, we will learn how to exchange next week.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about magnetic poles and how they attract and repel. Next week we will be having a go at a fun experiment using magnets.

 

RE

This week we have been exploring the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Next week our learning will be based around the fruits of the Holy Spirit. 

 

Geography

We had our exciting walk around Crowborough this week! We used our fieldwork and map skills to measure, plan and plot a route and used this to help us on our walk. We then checked off the features of a town we saw like a petrol station and a hospital. Finally, we stopped off at the High Street and looked at an old photograph taken of Crowborough High Street and compared this to how it looks now. We ten completed a detailed sketch.

 

History

This week we have been learning about the Peloponnesian War.

This week we have continued with the Greek myth Perseus. We have been summarising the events so far and using powerful verbs and synonyms to story mountain parts of the story. Next week we will be reading the myth King Midas.

We have been multiplying and dividing by 8. Next week we will be comparing statements as well as looking at related multiplication and division facts. We have also been telling time to the minute and will continue this next week as well as learning about a.m p.m.

This week we have been learning about friction. Next week we will be learning about magnetic forces.

This week we have been learning about how the Kingdom of God has grown over time and how this connects to the Pentecost.

This week we have been reading the Greek myth: Perseus and learning how to use conjunctions not only in the middle of a sentence but at the beginning of a sentence correctly. Next week we will continue reading the story Perseus.

 

Maths

We have been telling the time in 5 minute intervals and next week we tell the time in one minute intervals. We have also learnt the 4 times table and have begun the 8 times table, which we will continue next week.

 

Science

This week we have begun our learning on forces, focusing on push and pull. Next week we will compare how things move.

 

RE

This week we begun our topic on the Kingdom of God and have learnt about the story of the Pentecost.

 

Geography

This week we have learnt about villages and next week we will focus on what a town is.

This week we have begun learning about Greek myths - focusing on the myth 'Icarus'. We have had a go at shared writing, working together to write our own version of a section of the story using powerful verbs. Next week we will be moving on to the Greek myth 'Perseus'.

 

Maths

We have begun learning how to multiply a divide by 3, next week we will be looking at multiplying and dividing by 4. 

We have also begun learning about time, focusing on months and years. Next week we will be learning how to tell the time in 5 minute intervals.

 

Geography

We have started our new topic 'settlements and cities' and we begun by looking at what a settlement means and the 5 types of settlements: city, town, village, hamlet and farmstead. Next week we will learn what a village is. 

 

History

We have started our new topic 'ancient Greece' with an amazing visit from 'Lets Go Greek UK'. They kindly came in to talk all things Greek and made us some delicious Greek cuisine! We then learnt the Greek alphabet and how to count to 10 in Greek as well as hearing what our name could be in Greek. Thank you so much to the Let's Go Greek UK team for such a fun-filled and delicious afternoon!!

This week we have been focusing on non-fiction writing, about three famous scientists: Alessandro Volta, Maria Telkes and Thomas Edison. Next week we will be looking at poetry.

 

Maths

This week we have completed our learning on addition and subtraction and length and perimeter. We have been learning about pictograms, bar charts and tables. Next week we will begin learning about time and multiplication and division.

 

Science

This week has been STEM week and as part of our STEM topic of growth, we have focused on the growth of electricity! We have focused on static electricity and have completed some exciting experiments testing this with balloons and wool and pepper! Next week we will be finalising our STEM topic learning.

WOW! What a tournament!! Our first ever times tables tournament has been completed as part of home learning this week and the children have absolutely LOVED seeing how well they are doing and who is winning! Winners will be announced Monday!!

This week we have been learning about Maundy Thursday and created an acrostic poem. Next week we will be exploring how Christians celebrate Holy Week.

This week we have been learning about how coastal processes are formed and ordered how stacks, arches and stumps are formed. Next week we will be learning about coastal habitats.

This week we have had a grammar and punctuation focus. We have been learning about possessive apostrophes and how these change depending on whether the word is singular or plural. We have also learnt about simple past and present perfect tenses. Next week we will be having a non-fiction text focus and the features of these.

 

Maths

This week we have been measuring and calculating perimeter as well as adding and subtracting 2 3-digit numbers. Next week we will be estimating and checking answers.

 

Science

As part of our STEM topic of growth this week we have learnt about the growth of settlements and had a go at making our own settlement. Next week we will be finding out whether brains can grow.

 

RE

This week we have focused on certain events of Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday) and how Mary must have felt  during each of these events in Holy Week. Next week we will be learning about Maundy Thursday.

 

Geography

This week we have learnt about coastal processes and how erosion and deposition have changed coastal landscapes over-time. Next week we will go into more detail on this.

This week has been our book week and we have been basing our English lessons on the story 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. We have focused on writing descriptive sentences using synonyms. Next week we will be focusing on our grammar skills.

 

Maths

This week we have been adding and subtracting length using different units of measurement. Next week we will begin perimeter. We have also been adding and subtracting 2 3-digit numbers, looking at the process of exchanging. We will continue with this and try to use the column method.

 

Science

This week on our topic of growth, we have learnt about plant growth. We have conducted an experiment to see if plants really do need: the right temperature, light and water. Next week we will be looking at how cities grow.

 

RE

This week we have been learning about the events of Holy week and how people would have felt on the different days of this week. Next week we will be learning about what the events of Holy week mean to Christians.

 

Geography

This week we conducted an experiment to test the different types of weathering: biological weathering, chemical weathering, erosion and physical weathering. Next week we will be looking at how coastal features are formed.

This week we have been reading the story 'Tin Forest' written by Helen Ward. We have made predictions and enjoyed looking at the descriptive language. We have also been learning how to use inverted commas Next week is book week and World Book Day! Our learning will be centered around the story 'Journey' by Aaron Becker.

This week we have begun adding and subtracting 2 3-digit numbers. Next week we will continue with this and we will learn how to subtract 2 3-digit numbers. We have also been subtracting lengths using different measurements and converting them, which we will continue next week.

 

Science

This week we have begun our exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) topic 'Growth'. Each week in Science we will focus on a new topic around growth. This week we have learnt about human growth and next week we will be learning about plant growth.

 

RE

This week we have started the topic on Salvation. Our key question that we will focus on is 'Why do Christians call the day Jesus died Good Friday?' We have been looking at the word Salvation and looking at different 'saving' scenarios and the story of Zacchaeus. Next week we will be looking at the story of Good Friday in more detail. 

 

Geography

This week we have begun our topic of 'Coastal Processes and Landforms'. Learning about the terms 'erosion' and 'weathering' which we will continue this week.

What a way to end our week with  'rock n roll' number day!! The children have been immersed in all things Maths and have LOVED being rockstars for the day! Thank you for all the time and effort gone into the amazing costumes, hair styles and make up we have seen today!

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to subtract length. We will continue this next term and this will also be a focus for our home learning this week. We have also been adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers to and from 3-digit numbers using place value counters. We will continue with this next term.

 

Science

This week we had a special visitor, a STEM ambassador called Dr Bammam. He taught us about light and shadows and we even had a go at using a shadow puppet theatre.

 

RE

This week we have been focusing on Muslim call to prayer and Muslim greetings. Next week we will be summing up our learning.

 

History

This week we have been learning about hieroglyphs and cartouches. We have also learnt about the Egyptian Gods. Next week we will be summing up our learning.

This week we have been writing up our own versions of the story Egyptian Cinderella in neat and have created a book out of them. Next week our English wil be focused on topic work.

 

Maths

This week we have been adding and subtracting hundreds to and from a 3-digit number. We have also been adding lengths in metres, centimetres and millimetres. Next week we will begin subtracting lengths and adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about sun safety and the pros and cons of being in the sun. Next week we will be making shadows.

 

History

This week was very exciting for year 3 as we had an Egyptian visitor! Lauren taught us all about Egypt through exciting, fun and practical activities and we even got to see an embalming!!

This week we have been working on writing our own version of the story Egyptian Cinderella. Next week we will be editing these stories and reviewing our exciting visitor on Thursday!

 

Maths

This week we have been adding and subtracting a 3-digit number and a 2-digit number using the column method. We have then been using manipulatives to add hundreds to a 3-digit number. We have also been adding length which we will continue next week along with subtracting hundreds from a 3-digit number.

 

Science

This week we have been exploring mirrors and how they reflect light. We experimented with mirrors by writing messages to each other using a mirror. Next week we will be learning about sun safety.

 

RE

This week we learnt about the story of Bilal and the willingness to 'submit'. Next week we will be exploring Muslim prayers.

 

Geography

This week we have been learning about the source and mouth of rivers in the UK. Focusing on the water cycle and how his is a continuous process happening all the time, not just once.

Friday 14th January

Today was our walk to the river Ghyll in Jarvis Brook. This was fantastic opportunity for the children to use their fieldwork skills and be used to using a map to support them in finding their way. Using a map of the local area, we plotted our route and looked at local landmarks we passed like the doctors and Sainsburys. We then looked at the symbols used for different places on maps. As you can see from the photos, we had a fantastic time and got very, very wet and muddy but left with huge smiles on our faces!!

 

English

This week we have started the story Egyptian Cinderella. We have been comparing this version to the traditional tale Cinderella and have been focusing on the feelings of the main character Rhodopis and writing sentences using comparitive conjunctions. Next week we will be continuing with this story.

 

Maths

This week we have been focusing on equivalent lengths in mm and cm and adding and subtracting tens from a 3-digit number using manipulatives to help us. Next week we will be comparing lengths and adding and subtracting numbers using the column method.

 

RE

This week we have been looking at obedience and what this means. We have learnt about the call to prayer and what this means for Muslims Next week we will be looking at the story of Bilal.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about reflective fabrics and experimented with different fabrics to see which are reflective and which aren't. Next week we will be using mirrors to test reflection.

 

Geography

Not only have we had our trip to the Ghyll this week we have also been learning about dams and the benefits and disadvantages of these. Next week we will be learning about the water cycle.

This week we have been reading a diary written by a young Neolithic farmer. Focusing on the features of diary writing, planning our own version then writing it up. We have looked a lot at use of showing emotions not just stating them. Next week we will be looking at different examples of writing.

 

Maths

This week we have been adding and subtracting ones with 3-digit numbers using the colum method. We have finished learning about money and are now going to begin learning about length and perimeter. Next week we will move on to adding and subtracting tens and measuring length.

 

Science

This week we learnt how fossils are formed. We have also finalised our Science learning for this term. Next term we will begin learning about light.

 

RE

This week we have finalised our learning on the Holy Trinity and what this is. Next term we will be learning about Islam.

 

History

This week we have been comparing a Stone Age dwelling and a Neolithic Age house. We have looked at these main features: hearth, wattle and daub and straw roof. Next week we will be learning about pottery in the Neolithic Age.

This week we have finished our learning on the Stone Age and begun learning about the Neolithic Age, focusing on the archeologist Dorothy Garrod. We have also been learning about farming in the Neolithic Age. Next week we will be learning about Neolithic living.

We were very fortunate as a school to be involved in a community project for Sustainable Living in Crowborough, to bring attention to the Climate change focus at the recent COP 26 in Glasgow.  Each class decorated a selection of moths and these are on display at the Community centre, Pine Grove, until the end of this month. All are welcome to visit as they make an amazing display altogether. 

English

This week we have been conducting some performance poetry. Focusing on the poem Boneyard Rap by Wes Magee. Next week we will be continuing with some performance poetry.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to work out change, which we will continue next week. We have also been learning how to add and subtract ones, next week we will be adding and subtracting tens.

 

Science

This week we have been conducting research and experiments with rocks. Learning which rocks are permeable and which are erode easily. Next week these experiments will be continuing next week.

 

RE

This week we have been learning about the Holy Spirit as part of the Holy Trinity ad the festival of Pentecost. Next week we will be learning about Christian baptism.

 

Geography

This week we have been learning about the 'Ring of Fire' and labelling the different tectonic plates around the ring of fire using an atlas. Next week we will be focusing on History and writing up what we have learnt in Geography.

Thank you so much for all the Stone Age tool designs that have been sent in so far, we are so excited to see the end result! We would really like all the children to be accessing all of their home learning, so if there are any problems with this, let your child's class teacher know and we can try and arrange something for you.

 

English

This week we have been learning how to write our own version of the story Escape from Pompeii using all we have learnt in year 3 so far. Next week we will be learning about performance poetry.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning about adding and subtracting multiples of 100. We have also been learning how to subtract money. Next week we will be learning how to give change and how to add and subtract.

 

Science

This week we had a very special visit from a geologist called Kerry. She taught us all about what her job entails and the exciting things she does! We looked at different pictures and rock formations across the country, as well as looking at some rock and sand samples she bought with her. Next week we will be learning about the properties of different rocks.

 

RE

This week we have been continuing learning about the Holy Trinity. Welooked at three pictures and what they symbolise. Next week we will be learning more about the Holy Spirit.

 

History

This week we have been learning about Skara Brae and Stonehenge. Next week we will be learning about Neolithic houses.

This week we had a very special whole school worship on Thursday 11th November to remember those who lost their lives in wars. We listened to readings and poetry and held a two minute silence as a school by the beautiful poppies created by year 6 at 11am.

 

English

This week we have been continuing with the story 'Escape from Pompeii'. We have been learning about prepositions. Next week we will be writing using the structure of the story.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to count in 50s. Next week we will begin learning about adding and subtracting multiples of 100. We have also been learning how to subtract money and will continue this next week.

 

RE

This week we have been looking at the Creation story, we went through the story using props and then decided how we were going to reflect on the story, whether we would write a poem or draw a picture.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about the layers of the Earth which linked to our Geography last week. We labelled a diagram of the Earth and spoke in detail about each layer.

This week we have begun our new text Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. We have been writing expanded noun phrases and using subordinating conjunctions. Next week we will be continuing with the story and having a go at our first big write.

This week we have been learning how to subtract money and will continue this next week. We have also been learning how to order numbers to 1000. Next week we will be learning how to count in 50s.

 

RE 

We are beginning a new topic 'Incarnation: What is the Trinity? Next week we will be understanding the role of God the Father.

 

Geography

This week we have begun a new topic - volcanoes. We learnt about the layers of the Earth's crust and made these using play dough. Next week we will be learning how volcanoes are formed.

This week we have been having a refresher in punctuation, grammar and editing. Next term we will be reading 'The Story of Pompeii.

This week we have been continuing to add money and compare numbers to 1000 using < > or =. Next term we will be subtracting money to give change and ordering numbers to 1000.

 

Geography

This week we have finalised our learning on mountains by looking at a tourist's impact. Next term we will be learning about volcanoes.

 

RE

This week we have finialised our RE learning on the People of God. Next term we will begin to learn about Incarnation.

 

Latin

This week we have been reading a story about a birthday part and learning how to say Happy birthday to you in Latin. Next term we will be continuing to read stories aloud in Latin.

This week we have been we have been inferring from the story The Stone Age Boy what a character is feeling. Next week we will be writing from the viewpoint of a character.

 

Maths

We have been converting pence to pounds, next week we will be adding money. We have also been finding, showing and estimating numbers on a number-line to 1000. Next week we will continue with this and comparing and ordering numbers to 1000.

 

History

We went on our trip to the Ashdown Forest visitor centre where we took part in a variety of Stone Age activities, including: making arrows, making clay bowls, making shelters, hiking and plenty more!

We have been learning about how different mountains are formed. Next week we will be describing a mountainous climate.

We have been writing descriptive pieces about settings in the story Stone Age Boy and wrote our on piece from the character's perspective.

 

Next week we will be inferring how a character feels.

 

Maths

We have been converting pence to pounds and understand that a 3-digit number is made of 100s, 10s and 1s.

Next week we will be continuing to convert pence to pounds and showing numbers to 1000 on a number-line.

 

RE

We have been learning about the story of Genesis 12 v 1-7 and the word 'faith'. Next week we will be learning about the Salvation Army.

 

Science

We have been learning about our bones and how they protect us. We experimented how to build a structure to protect a teacake!

This week we have been reading a new text titled The Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. We have been focusing on descriptive language and learning about nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs with a bit of healthy competition! We then used our new vocabulary to write our own expanded noun phrases. Next week we will be writing from a character' perspective.

Maths

This week we have been continuing to learn about money, counting pounds and pence. Next week we will move on to converting pence to pounds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have also been learning about numbers to 1000 and how to write these in numerals. Next week we will practise writing these in words and understand that 3 digit numbers are made from 100s, 10s and 1s.

We had a very exciting music lesson this week as we have started learning recorders and we have now each been given our own recorder to practise on!

Friday 17th September 2021

 

English

This week we have continued with our core text Ug. We have been focusing on the layout and how it is different to the layout of usual story books. As the layout is set out as comic, we focused on the dialogue of the characters. We reenacted some scenes fro the story using puppets and then wrote up the dialogue used in some speech bubbles. This led us to create our own comic strips of one of the parts of Ug. Next week we will be moving on to a new core text: Stone Age Boy.

 

Maths

This week we have begun learning about place value, focusing on numbers in the hundreds using manipulatives to explore 3-digit numbers. We have also been learning about money, focusing on how to add pounds and pence. Next week we will continue learning about 3 digit numbers and how to add pounds and pence together.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about how much fruit and vegetables and sugar we should be consuming in our diet. We were in a group and given a 'client' to look over what they ate in a typical week. We enjoyed adding up the teaspoons of sugar they had and collating the data. Next week we will be putting the results into a bar graph.

 

Geography

This week we have begun reading a booklet that tells us all we need to know about mountains! We looked at four mountains in the UK and learnt that the biggest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis in Scotland. 

Friday 10th September 2021

 

English

This week we have begun our story 'Ug Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs.

We have focused a lot on the first three pages where we meet the main character Ug and his Mum and Dad Dugs and Dug. We learn a lot about those three characters and have learnt about the word characterisation and have written some descriptive sentences about these three characters. Next week we will be learning about dialogue.

 

Maths

This week we have focused a lot on assessing our prior knowledge on arithmetic, problem solving, place value and money. We have begun place value this week and have recapped representing numbers to 100. Next week we will continue learning place value and then begin learning about money.

 

Latin

An exciting week this week as we begun learning a new subject...Latin!! We learnt how to say hello to one person 'salve', hello to more than one person 'salvete' and goodbye to one person 'vale' and goodbye to more than one person 'valete'. Next week we will read a story aloud in Latin.

 

History

We have begun our topic on the Stone Age and for our 'stunning start' we acted like Stone Age people using their language of sounds, actions and drawins. We created 'caves' using our tables and dens outside in the woods.
