Friday 14th January

Today was our walk to the river Ghyll in Jarvis Brook. This was fantastic opportunity for the children to use their fieldwork skills and be used to using a map to support them in finding their way. Using a map of the local area, we plotted our route and looked at local landmarks we passed like the doctors and Sainsburys. We then looked at the symbols used for different places on maps. As you can see from the photos, we had a fantastic time and got very, very wet and muddy but left with huge smiles on our faces!!

 

English

This week we have started the story Egyptian Cinderella. We have been comparing this version to the traditional tale Cinderella and have been focusing on the feelings of the main character Rhodopis and writing sentences using comparitive conjunctions. Next week we will be continuing with this story.

 

Maths

This week we have been focusing on equivalent lengths in mm and cm and adding and subtracting tens from a 3-digit number using manipulatives to help us. Next week we will be comparing lengths and adding and subtracting numbers using the column method.

 

RE

This week we have been looking at obedience and what this means. We have learnt about the call to prayer and what this means for Muslims Next week we will be looking at the story of Bilal.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about reflective fabrics and experimented with different fabrics to see which are reflective and which aren't. Next week we will be using mirrors to test reflection.

 

Geography

Not only have we had our trip to the Ghyll this week we have also been learning about dams and the benefits and disadvantages of these. Next week we will be learning about the water cycle.

English

This week we have been reading a diary written by a young Neolithic farmer. Focusing on the features of diary writing, planning our own version then writing it up. We have looked a lot at use of showing emotions not just stating them. Next week we will be looking at different examples of writing.

 

Maths

This week we have been adding and subtracting ones with 3-digit numbers using the colum method. We have finished learning about money and are now going to begin learning about length and perimeter. Next week we will move on to adding and subtracting tens and measuring length.

 

Science

This week we learnt how fossils are formed. We have also finalised our Science learning for this term. Next term we will begin learning about light.

 

RE

This week we have finalised our learning on the Holy Trinity and what this is. Next term we will be learning about Islam.

 

History

This week we have been comparing a Stone Age dwelling and a Neolithic Age house. We have looked at these main features: hearth, wattle and daub and straw roof. Next week we will be learning about pottery in the Neolithic Age.

This week we have been continuing learning about performance poetry and have had a go at writing our own. Next week we are learning about story writing.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to add and subtract ones from a 3-digit number, looking at the exchanging process. Next week we will learn how to add and subtract ones from a 3-digit number using the column method.

We have also been learning how to give change. Next week we will be starting to learn about length and perimeter.

 

Science

This week we have continued our experiment on erosion and permeability. Next week we will be learning about fossils.

 

RE

This week we have been learning about a Christian baptism and the difference between an infant baptism and a believer baptism. Next week we will be writing all we have learnt about the Holy Trinity this term.

 

History

This week we have finished our learning on the Stone Age and begun learning about the Neolithic Age, focusing on the archeologist Dorothy Garrod. We have also been learning about farming in the Neolithic Age. Next week we will be learning about Neolithic living.

We were very fortunate as a school to be involved in a community project for Sustainable Living in Crowborough, to bring attention to the Climate change focus at the recent COP 26 in Glasgow.  Each class decorated a selection of moths and these are on display at the Community centre, Pine Grove, until the end of this month. All are welcome to visit as they make an amazing display altogether. 

English

This week we have been conducting some performance poetry. Focusing on the poem Boneyard Rap by Wes Magee. Next week we will be continuing with some performance poetry.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to work out change, which we will continue next week. We have also been learning how to add and subtract ones, next week we will be adding and subtracting tens.

 

Science

This week we have been conducting research and experiments with rocks. Learning which rocks are permeable and which are erode easily. Next week these experiments will be continuing next week.

 

RE

This week we have been learning about the Holy Spirit as part of the Holy Trinity ad the festival of Pentecost. Next week we will be learning about Christian baptism.

 

Geography

This week we have been learning about the 'Ring of Fire' and labelling the different tectonic plates around the ring of fire using an atlas. Next week we will be focusing on History and writing up what we have learnt in Geography.

Thank you so much for all the Stone Age tool designs that have been sent in so far, we are so excited to see the end result! We would really like all the children to be accessing all of their home learning, so if there are any problems with this, let your child's class teacher know and we can try and arrange something for you.

This week we have been learning how to write our own version of the story Escape from Pompeii using all we have learnt in year 3 so far. Next week we will be learning about performance poetry.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning about adding and subtracting multiples of 100. We have also been learning how to subtract money. Next week we will be learning how to give change and how to add and subtract.

 

Science

This week we had a very special visit from a geologist called Kerry. She taught us all about what her job entails and the exciting things she does! We looked at different pictures and rock formations across the country, as well as looking at some rock and sand samples she bought with her. Next week we will be learning about the properties of different rocks.

 

RE

This week we have been continuing learning about the Holy Trinity. Welooked at three pictures and what they symbolise. Next week we will be learning more about the Holy Spirit.

 

History

This week we have been learning about Skara Brae and Stonehenge. Next week we will be learning about Neolithic houses.

This week we had a very special whole school worship on Thursday 11th November to remember those who lost their lives in wars. We listened to readings and poetry and held a two minute silence as a school by the beautiful poppies created by year 6 at 11am.

 

English

This week we have been continuing with the story 'Escape from Pompeii'. We have been learning about prepositions. Next week we will be writing using the structure of the story.

 

Maths

This week we have been learning how to count in 50s. Next week we will begin learning about adding and subtracting multiples of 100. We have also been learning how to subtract money and will continue this next week.

 

RE

This week we have been looking at the Creation story, we went through the story using props and then decided how we were going to reflect on the story, whether we would write a poem or draw a picture.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about the layers of the Earth which linked to our Geography last week. We labelled a diagram of the Earth and spoke in detail about each layer.

This week we have begun a new topic - volcanoes. We learnt about the layers of the Earth's crust and made these using play dough. Next week we will be learning how volcanoes are formed.

This week we have finalised our learning on mountains by looking at a tourist's impact. Next term we will be learning about volcanoes.

This week we have finialised our RE learning on the People of God. Next term we will begin to learn about Incarnation.

 

Latin

This week we have been reading a story about a birthday part and learning how to say Happy birthday to you in Latin. Next term we will be continuing to read stories aloud in Latin.

This week we have been learning about the bones in our body. Next term we will be learning about rocks.

This week we have learning about how Stone Age people hunted their food and how they made their tools.

This week we have been learning about God's promise to Abraham which we will continue next week.

We have been converting pence to pounds, next week we will be adding money. We have also been finding, showing and estimating numbers on a number-line to 1000. Next week we will continue with this and comparing and ordering numbers to 1000.

 

History

We went on our trip to the Ashdown Forest visitor centre where we took part in a variety of Stone Age activities, including: making arrows, making clay bowls, making shelters, hiking and plenty more!

We have been learning about how different mountains are formed. Next week we will be describing a mountainous climate.

This week we have been learning about the Salvation Army. Next week we will be exploring God's promises to Abraham.

We have been writing descriptive pieces about settings in the story Stone Age Boy and wrote our on piece from the character's perspective.

 

Next week we will be inferring how a character feels.

 

Maths

We have been converting pence to pounds and understand that a 3-digit number is made of 100s, 10s and 1s.

Next week we will be continuing to convert pence to pounds and showing numbers to 1000 on a number-line.

 

RE

We have been learning about the story of Genesis 12 v 1-7 and the word 'faith'. Next week we will be learning about the Salvation Army.

 

Science

We have been learning about our bones and how they protect us. We experimented how to build a structure to protect a teacake!

This week we have been reading a new text titled The Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. We have been focusing on descriptive language and learning about nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs with a bit of healthy competition! We then used our new vocabulary to write our own expanded noun phrases. Next week we will be writing from a character' perspective.

Maths

This week we have been continuing to learn about money, counting pounds and pence. Next week we will move on to converting pence to pounds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have also been learning about numbers to 1000 and how to write these in numerals. Next week we will practise writing these in words and understand that 3 digit numbers are made from 100s, 10s and 1s.

We had a very exciting music lesson this week as we have started learning recorders and we have now each been given our own recorder to practise on!

Friday 17th September 2021

 

English

This week we have continued with our core text Ug. We have been focusing on the layout and how it is different to the layout of usual story books. As the layout is set out as comic, we focused on the dialogue of the characters. We reenacted some scenes fro the story using puppets and then wrote up the dialogue used in some speech bubbles. This led us to create our own comic strips of one of the parts of Ug. Next week we will be moving on to a new core text: Stone Age Boy.

 

Maths

This week we have begun learning about place value, focusing on numbers in the hundreds using manipulatives to explore 3-digit numbers. We have also been learning about money, focusing on how to add pounds and pence. Next week we will continue learning about 3 digit numbers and how to add pounds and pence together.

 

Science

This week we have been learning about how much fruit and vegetables and sugar we should be consuming in our diet. We were in a group and given a 'client' to look over what they ate in a typical week. We enjoyed adding up the teaspoons of sugar they had and collating the data. Next week we will be putting the results into a bar graph.

 

Geography

This week we have begun reading a booklet that tells us all we need to know about mountains! We looked at four mountains in the UK and learnt that the biggest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis in Scotland. 

Friday 10th September 2021

 

English

This week we have begun our story 'Ug Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs.

We have focused a lot on the first three pages where we meet the main character Ug and his Mum and Dad Dugs and Dug. We learn a lot about those three characters and have learnt about the word characterisation and have written some descriptive sentences about these three characters. Next week we will be learning about dialogue.

 

Maths

This week we have focused a lot on assessing our prior knowledge on arithmetic, problem solving, place value and money. We have begun place value this week and have recapped representing numbers to 100. Next week we will continue learning place value and then begin learning about money.

 

Latin

An exciting week this week as we begun learning a new subject...Latin!! We learnt how to say hello to one person 'salve', hello to more than one person 'salvete' and goodbye to one person 'vale' and goodbye to more than one person 'valete'. Next week we will read a story aloud in Latin.

 

History

We have begun our topic on the Stone Age and for our 'stunning start' we acted like Stone Age people using their language of sounds, actions and drawins. We created 'caves' using our tables and dens outside in the woods.
