English and Maths are taught daily, mainly in the morning and these are supplemented by regular spelling and arithmetic practice to improve skills.
We would like you to read with your child at least 3 times a week and record any comments in your child’s Reading Record Book. These comments may be used to help support our judgments later in the year. Please also try to ask your children questions about the title, the pictures and what they have read to check for comprehension. Please remember, books only get changed when the book has been read 3 times, this is a crucial year 1 objective as it helps with their fluency and development of accuracy.
Please ensure all kit etc. is named clearly. This then makes it easier to reunite lost items with their owners.
Forest School will continue on alternative weeks - further details to follow in due course.
ART
We thorough enjoy art and the children are encouraged to explore their creative sides right across the curriculum. In addition we have some great art and design projects coming up this year. Art will mainly be on a Monday or Tuesday although on some occasions when we have a bigger project this may continue over a few afternoons. We have a selection of art aprons/shirts for the children to wear but may we request that if you have any old adult shirts that you would be happy to donate to Year 1 we would really appreciate it as we want to minimise any mess to their uniforms where possible.
Homework will be set every Wednesday and will be due in on the following Wednesday. This will consist mainly of phonic practise and spelling. We will begin to send out homework once they have settled in later this term.
In addition each term we will be giving the children an opportunity to complete a big "project" for homework - further details to come.
Unfortunately, due to the current Covid 19 situation we are unable to invite parents in to read with the children but as soon as these restrictions are lifted we would welcome any volunteers.
