At Fermor, we understand that Year 6 is an important year for all children. We aim to ensure that it is packed with fun and engaging learning and that we provide opportunities for children to develop their independence and citizenship skills in preparation for secondary school. Throughout the year, we work hard to ensure children develop the knowledge and skills they need so that they can not only excel in their Year 6 SATs tests, but also be ready for this next step in their education.
The majority of our children choose Beacon Academy as their secondary school, but we also have children who move onto a range of other schools including Uckfield Collage, Bennett Memorial Diocesan School and Kings Academy Ringmer. We work closely with all our secondary schools to ensure the children make as smooth a transition as possible.
A typical school day for our Year 6 children would include a maths, an English and a reading session in the morning. In the afternoons we teach subjects such as computing, history, geography, science and PE. Where ever possible, we link each subject to our learning theme for that term.
During their time in Year 6, the children engage in a range of special activities which usually include Bikeability, the Year 6 Production and a residential trip. To help the children develop a sense of responsibility, they are encouraged to put themselves forward for a job during their time in Year 6. These jobs can include being play leaders, helping in the dining hall, leading whole school worships and being ambassadors for people visiting our school. We are always very impressed by how much enthusiasm and time the children invest into these roles and they make a real difference to the life of our school.
During their time in Year Six, the children also have the opportunity to be selected as Head Boy or Head Girl for a month. Due to the current restrictions, the role has changed this year and may need to change further as the year progress. However typical duties could include:
