Friday 6th November 2026

What a lovely first week back we’ve had in Year 4. I think students were particularly thrilled with our first afternoon back being a DT lesson all about investigating biscuits! The goal of our DT learning this term is to develop our own Roman-inspired biscuits. It is no exaggeration to say squeals of excitement rang through the classrooms!

Our maths learning this week saw the introduction of area – we’ve reminded ourselves of what area is and how to find the area of shapes by counting the number of squares that they’re made up of.

Next week in maths, we’ll begin our new unit on multiplication and division. Please remember to log on to TTRS a few times a week to practise your times tables – our leaderboards haven’t changed much recently!

In English this week, we began our unit on persuasive speech writing by investigating persuasive mini-speeches on relevant topics like protecting our environment, having longer playtimes, and whether we should have a school pet… some very interesting sides were taken! Well done to students who were clear and articulate in their reasoning behind their opinions.

We’ve begun learning our model text – a persuasive speech on why I should be the next Egyptian Pharaoh – and will continue learning it over the next week, along with some specific sentence structure and persuasive vocabulary.

Reminders
  • Please ensure your child is sent in with an adequate waterproof rain jacket – the weather is starting to turn and we want to ensure all our students stay warm and dry on wet days.
  • 4M swims on a Tuesday this term, so please ensure swim kits are in. You may wish to bring them in on a Monday and leave them on hooks for Tuesday, which gives an extra day to remember them if they are forgotten!
  • We are lucky to have Forest School as our second PE session this term. 4WG, please bring your forest school clothes in for Tuesday and be prepared to change just before lunch. 4M, please bring your forest school clothes for Wednesday and be prepared to change just before lunch.

We made it! Well done to our students (and their families) for making it through an 8-week term. We're sure everyone is ready for a well-earned break.

This week in English, we wrote our independent warning stories after learning the structure and details which go into them. The effort and imagination used in writing was impressive! Well done to our students for all the hard work this term. Next term, we will turn our attention to non-fiction writing and learn the art of written persuasion and then how to write an effective set of instructions. Remember to check out the Model Text and Story Map section at the start of term for more information on what we are working on in our writing.

In Maths, we have been working hard to secure our understanding of adding and subtracting with exchanges. It's a tricky concept when first learnt - well done Year 4 for persevering. Next term we will spend the first week back refreshing our memories on this (practise makes perfect, as they say) before moving on to multiplication and division.

We have also spent some afternoons this week refreshing different skill: sewing! We have practised the running stitch and the back stitch as a refresher before a DT unit down the road. Next term, DT will be spread across a number of afternoons. Please keep an eye on the newsletter to know when to send your children in with their aprons as we will be learning about and making biscuits.

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 4!

The children have shown great enthusiasm and determination across all areas of their learning, and we are very proud of their hard work and positive attitudes. This week in P.E., the children have been developing their balancing skills. They worked hard to improve their stability, coordination and control, demonstrating excellent perseverance as they challenged themselves with a variety of balancing activities. In English, the children have been using their creativity to plan their own 'Adventure - Warning!' stories. They have explored exciting story ideas, developed imaginative characters and settings, and thought carefully about how to build suspense and excitement for their readers. Our geographers have been learning all about the Mediterranean region, exploring the countries and seas that make up this fascinating part of the world. The children have enjoyed locating Mediterranean countries on maps and discovering some of the unique features, climates and cultures found there.

Looking ahead to next week, we have lots to look forward to!

🎨 In Art, the children will begin painting their beautiful Christmas-themed images, carefully applying the artistic skills they have been developing this term. 🧵 We will also continue practising our sewing skills in preparation for creating  packages we will be making in Term 2. The children have already shown great determination as they learn and refine these important practical skills.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!

Friday 9th October 2026

What a lovely week it’s been in Year 4! Our Harvest church service was wonderful, as always, and a good way of reminding ourselves of how lucky we are to live in a place with land to grow crops and services like the food bank to ensure we all have enough to eat.

This week, our students enjoyed acting out the attack of Hannibal on Rome in the Second Punic War – be sure to ask your children if they were Romans or Carthaginians as we marched through the ‘Alps’ of Fermor playground!

We have also begun our new maths unit on addition and subtraction. Although it’s been a while since we’ve explicitly practised these skills, we’re dusting the cobwebs off and starting to remember the addition and subtraction strategies we learned in Year 3.

Next week in maths, we’ll build on the skills we’ve revised this week and continue with column addition and subtraction.

In English, we have spent the week innovating our model text. Each student has chosen one element to change in the story and has been able to practise writing the full story.

In English next week, we’ll start to think about changing more than one element of our model text and creating our own warning stories independently.

Reminders

Please ensure your child is sent in with an adequate waterproof rain jacket – the weather is starting to turn and we want to ensure all our students stay warm and dry on wet days.

Friday 2nd October 2026

This week we have begun to delve deeper into how our model text, ‘The Canal’, is written so we can begin to learn how to write our own descriptive warning stories. For more information on what we’re up to in English, be sure to check out the Story Maps and Model Texts section of our class page. We took a quick break from this story on Thursday, though, in order to celebrate National Poetry Day. After listening to and learning a bit about poetry from Joseph Coelho, we explored writing our own poems through a game: ‘Roll-A-Poem’. Students chose their favourite something, then were prompted on what to add to their poem by the roll of a die. It’s safe to say we have some budding poets in our year group – we can’t wait to see where this could take them in life!

Next week in English, we’ll begin to construct our own versions of ‘The Canal’ with one changed element.

In maths this week, we have learned a new skill: rounding. As with all new things, it takes practise, but we’re getting the hang of it! We are continuing to encourage our students to access Times Tables Rock Stars at home. Today marks the start of a new battle: 4WG versus the reigning champs, 4M! Will 4M keep their streak going? Will 4WG emerge the victor? Hopefully our students are ready to battle it out and find out next week!

Next week in maths, we’ll dive into our new unit: addition and subtraction.

Friday 25th September 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

Firstly, thank you so much for your patience with us as we have navigated through our IT changes! We hope for smooth sailing from here on out.

We can’t quite believe how far we are into Term 1, but we couldn’t be prouder of all the hard work our year group has put in already.

This term in English, we are working on writing descriptive narratives. We are basing our work on a short story called The Canal (for more information, please check the Model Texts and Story Maps section of our Class Page). This week, we have been orally rehearsing the story now that we have learnt it by using our story map. This week, we have been working on using descriptive vocabulary in specific sentence structures.
Next week, we'll begin to look more closely at the structure of the whole story in order to know how to construct our own later in the term.

In maths so far, we have been focusing on securing our Place Value knowledge. We're building on what was learned in Year 3 and beginning to work with 4-digit numbers.
Next week, we'll finish our Place Value unit by learning to round.

4WG have been enjoying the new swimming schedule and being able to swim each week. 4M have been lucky enough to take advantage of the lovely autumn weather and have PE lessons outside. We're working on our tag rugby skills - watch this space to see what superstar athletes we're becoming!
As a reminder, students must have PE kits in school on Tuesday and Thursday. We recommend bringing kits in and leaving them in school until the end of the term.
