Important Year 5 Information

 

Last call for the purchase of CGP books. We will be putting an order in for CGP books on Thursday (1st October). Any later requests will need to be ordered through the CGP website which is double the cost. If anyone does not purchase the books, we will need to print out the homework, which is more likely to be misplaced. 

Harvest Festival: Please could all harvest festival donations be brought to the church (7th October).

This week's learning

Week 7 - This week, Year 5 have been developing their wonderful setting descriptions, using the model text of the Caravan. In Mathematics, we have solved problems around multiples and factors within numbers. In Art, they have been exploring further use of the printing technique with paints. In RE, students explored virtually and built a paper model representation of Canterbury Cathedral. In History, we continued to understand how language and the numeric system changed over hundreds of years. In Computing, we explored how sleep has specific effects on the body and the mind, demonstrating why it so important.

 

Week 5 - This week we have been utilising our toolkit of essential features a poem may include and creating our own versions. We spent time reading together and practised editing our work for improvements. In mathematics, we have been exploring how operators (addition and subtraction) can be inversed, demonstrating the fact family of numbers in a calculation. In computing, we have identified how searches are ranked and how we can design our own website. In Science, we have explored the life cycle of birds and plants. In Geography, we have continued to identify why the state of California is running out of water, learning about the importance of irrigation, precipitation and effects of droughts. 

 

Week 4 - Year 5 have been learning more about the features and structure of poems, including free verse poems. We have explored how place value can be an effective tool when rounding numbers and working in tens, hundreds and thousands. In Science are have been developing on our knowledge of the life cycle of a bird and how that compared to the stages of both mammals or amphibians. 

 

Week 3 - Year 5 have settled into school well this week, excited to extend their learning. Our focus in English has been to understand the features of poetry and how to innovate to write our own. In Maths, we have continued to develop our knowledge of place value up to 1,000,000. In History, we explored why Al-Munsur chose to place the round city of Baghdad near the River Tigris. In Science, Year  have explored the differences between amphibians and insects, compared to different types of mammals. In Geography, we are learning about how California requires an abundance of water to grow crops.

 

Homework

This week's homework is to recap the differences between different types of nouns and how to identify when they require a capital letter. For Mathematics, we are reviewing our knowledge of place value up to 10,000. For Year 5's reading comprehension, we are linking the reading to their science of living things and their habitats.

Homework will be set on Fridays and will be due back the following Thursday, this allows seven days for children to complete. Year 5 will therefore be able to mark in class and review any points they find challenging so we can further support.

 

Spellings

Spellings will be set on a Friday and the children will write these in their contact books on Monday morning. A spelling quiz will be given on Friday mornings each week.​

PE

PE in Year 5 is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has a fully labelled kit. This should include: their house t-shirt, school regulation shorts, socks and trainers. In colder weather, children may wear sweatshirts and jogging bottoms. Please ensure hair is tied up and all jewellery is removed where possible.  If a child has had their ears pierced recently, please send in some medical tape to cover them up for the session.

Swimming

Swimming day is to be confirmed, but will be in Term 5 with 5J in the first three weeks and 5PR in the last three weeks.

Some children will have booster swimming sessions on a Thursday afternoon but specific parents will be notified by letter about these.

Please ensure the children bring a swimming kit. The kit must include a swimming costume or trunks/shorts, a swimming hat, goggles, a towel and footwear such as sliders or flip-flops. We welcome volunteers to support us so please do let your child's class teacher know if you are DBS checked and can support. We are very grateful for your time.

Home Learning 

We expect your child to read and practise times tables regularly at home using their times-tables login. Spellings will be set on a Friday and learnt weekly to be tested on a Friday. There will be one English and one Maths task to complete weekly. This will be set on a Friday, due the following Thursday.
