Important Year 5 Information

 

This week's learning

Year 5 have settled into school well this week, excited to extend their learning. Our focus in English has been to understand the features of poetry and how to innovate to write our own. In Maths, we have continued to develop our knowledge of place value up to 1,000,000. In History, we explored why Al-Munsur chose to place the round city of Baghdad near the River Tigris. In Science, Year  have explored the differences between amphibians and insects, compared to different types of mammals. In Geography, we are learning about how California requires an abundance of water to grow crops.

 

Homework

This week's homework is to recap the differences between different types of nouns and how to identify when they require a capital letter. For Mathematics, we are reviewing our knowledge of place value up to 10,000. For Year 5's reading comprehension, we are linking the reading to their science of living things and their habitats.

Homework will be set on Fridays and will be due back the following Thursday, this allows seven days for children to complete. Year 5 will therefore be able to mark in class and review any points they find challenging so we can further support.

 

Spellings

Spellings will be set on a Friday and the children will write these in their contact books on Monday morning. A spelling quiz will be given on Friday mornings each week.​

PE

PE in Year 5 is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has a fully labelled kit. This should include: their house t-shirt, school regulation shorts, socks and trainers. In colder weather, children may wear sweatshirts and jogging bottoms. Please ensure hair is tied up and all jewellery is removed where possible.  If a child has had their ears pierced recently, please send in some medical tape to cover them up for the session.

Swimming

Swimming day is to be confirmed, but will be in Term 5 with 5J in the first three weeks and 5PR in the last three weeks.

Some children will have booster swimming sessions on a Thursday afternoon but specific parents will be notified by letter about these.

Please ensure the children bring a swimming kit. The kit must include a swimming costume or trunks/shorts, a swimming hat, goggles, a towel and footwear such as sliders or flip-flops. We welcome volunteers to support us so please do let your child's class teacher know if you are DBS checked and can support. We are very grateful for your time.

Home Learning 

We expect your child to read and practise times tables regularly at home using their times-tables login. Spellings will be set on a Friday and learnt weekly to be tested on a Friday. There will be one English and one Maths task to complete weekly. This will be set on a Friday, due the following Thursday.
