PE and Sport Premium

We have a comprehensive Physical Education curriculum at SHF, which includes all team games such as hockey, rugby, football and netball.  It also gives children to learn individual skills through sports such as dance and gymnastics.

We are also very fortunate to have our own indoor swimming pool on site with our own experienced swimming teachers.  This means that children at SHF all have the opportunity to swim onsite, from their first year at school, without needing to travel to a public swimming pool, meaning the children gain up to 1.5 hours valuable learning time each week.

Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

Swimming

The children of Sir Henry Fermor School are very fortunate to have their own swimming pool on site with adequate changing and showering facilities.

As part of the KS2 Curriculum for P.E children from years 3 and 4 are invited to attend weekly swimming lessons throughout the academic year.  During these lessons the children focus on developing their technique in the 4 swimming strokes as well as learning key skills such as somersaults, sculling actions and retrieving objects from the pool floor. In addition to this they also engage in themed sessions delivered to teach the importance of personal survival and safety in and around water.

Swimming lessons at Sir Henry Fermor are delivered with the aim to have all children swimming confidently by the time they leave the school at the end of year 6. For some this will come very naturally and for others it will take longer. For this reason further lessons are now available at designated times of the year for both year 5 and 6 children. It is very important to us that our children feel safe and confident in the water therefore lessons are planned and taught with individual needs and targets in mind.

Each year several children from the upper school are selected to represent the school in the annual swimming gala. Additional training sessions are offered to prepare the children for the event and great success has been celebrated over many years.
