Half term Phonics Practice
To give your children maximum opportunity to pass the phonics screening it would be beneficial to watch these clips as we are aware that some children are having difficulty blending three consonants to read words.
Term 5
Phonic Screening Test
All Year 1 children are required by the DfE to undergo a phonic screening test to assess children's decoding skills as a National initiative. This will be happening during the week beginning 12th June 2023. The children are required to blend and read aloud short decodeable words, some of which are real and some are phony, which we call "alien words" or "nonsense Nan" words. To pass the screening it is expected that they are able to read 33 out of 40 words. Some children will not pass due to the development of their decoding skills but they will retake the test in Year 2.
In the next few weeks all phonic groups will be over-learning and rehearsing to prepare for this test although the children will not think that they are doing anything different from their usual 1:1 activities.
Please support us by encouraging them to use the sounds that they know when playing the phase 3 and 4 games on Discovery Education (log ins are in contact books) It is essential that you sit with your child to hear their attempts out loud:
There are other games out there too. Please also practice the sheets that we will be sending home and the grapheme tags on reading records.
