We have drawn out the different spelling skills that the test contains to practise and focus on at home this week. They are:

  • /u/ sound spelt ou
  • eigh words: eight, freight
  • soft ‘c’ words: science, scissors
  • Words ending in mn: column, condemn
  • year 5 and 6 words
  • Words ending in ‘sure’: measure, leisure
  • -cian ending words: electrician
  • -ious ending words: ambitious

This week, we will be assessing the children's current spelling knowledge. We will be conducting more of a formalised test to see where the gaps are in the children's knowledge. In preparation for this, we would like you to focus on the following:

Year 3 and 4 common exception words.

Dropping the 'y' for an 'i' before adding 'ed', es or 'ly' - for example- cried or funnily

Different 'ai' sounds - /eigh/, /aigh/, /ay/

Words ending in -tion and -sion

Two syllable words ending in -er

Words ending in -ous

Words with 'ch' spelling making a 'ck' sound - for example - chorus

'ou' making an 'u' sound

The prefix -im
