Starting School at Sir Henry Fermor

Starting School - Information for children

It is a very exciting time, starting a new school and it can also sometimes feel a little scary for you (and your parents!) so we hope that this information will help prepare you and answer any questions you may have to enable you to settle in very quickly.

We are very proud of our children, our school and our church links and we are really happy that you have chosen to be a part of our Fermor family.

We are very lucky at our school as we have a large site which includes great grounds to explore and fantastic indoor spaces.

In our grounds we have:

  • A swimming pool, where you will learn to swim or improve your skills

  • A large sports field where you will be able to train for sports events all year and play in the summer months

  • A forest school area

  • A woodland area where you will be able to play on a trim trail

  • Two playgrounds, one for EYFS and KS1 and one for KS2

  • Spaces to run but also spaces to be quiet

  • An outdoor learning space to explore, specifically for EYFS

Inside our school we have:

  • Modern, bright, roomy classrooms and other learning spaces

  • Two halls for PE, dining, collective worship and assemblies

  • A KS1 and KS2 library

  • An exciting and inspiring curriculum

  • Knowledge rich, enthusiastic delivery of the core subjects

  • Varied daily worship, including outside speakers and performers

  • An enthusiastic class teacher and teaching assistant in every class

  • Many extra-curricular activities and clubs from running to orchestra and football to knitting!

Further afield we have:

  • Fantastic relationships with our link church – All Saints, Crowborough

  • Inspiring church worship once a month

  • Imaginative and exciting school trips linked to our learning journeys

  • The opportunity to take part in competitions with an academic or sports focus

  • The opportunity to attend workshops for aspiring able mathematicians and writers

We hope that you take advantage of all that we can offer you at Sir Henry Fermor and we really look forward to getting to know you and your family.

In-year Transfers - Your New School Day

It can be daunting, transferring to a new school, leaving friends and familiar places, but we will do everything we can to make your move as happy as possible.  You will be buddied with a new friend, from your new class and they will be able to help you to find your way around the school and ensure you settle in smoothly.  We want you to be happy and feel confident at school and so we have put together the following information that we hope will help.

Your First Day

Arriving

On your first day of school at SHF, please arrive at the main office at 08:45 where you will meet a member of the Inclusion Team, who will welcome you and show you to your new classroom.

Leaving

At the end of the day, you will go with your class to meet your adult at your year group door.

Worship

When you start, you will be put into a house group. These are: Green for Forest, Yellow for Warren, Blue for Brook and Red for Ghyll. You will be given a badge of your House and will take part in activities in your House groups.

On the first Wednesday of every month, we have a special worship at All Saints Church which starts at 9am. On these days, your parent/carer will take you straight to the church at 8:45am, where your teachers will be ready to meet you. Your adult is welcome to stay for the service if they would like.

Fridays are our celebration worships, led by our year 6 worship leaders, where Fermor Award Certificates are presented and you have a chance to win a book token if your Fermor Merit is drawn from the Merit box!

Our school motto is: Inspire, Believe, Achieve

And our school vision is:

Sir Henry Fermor enables everyone to succeed; as Jesus teaches through the parable of The Lost Sheep: no one is left behind. Inspiring children and adults, believing in God at the heart of all we do, through Christ’s love and guidance; all in the Sir Henry Fermor family flourish, achieving fullness.

(The dates for these special worships are published on our  newsletter. If you are unsure when these events will next take place, please contact our school office.)

We encourage all children to drink water throughout the day.  The Friends of Fermor will provide you with a gift of a water bottle on your first day of school.  Your parents/carers can purchase new tops for these water bottles at the office for 50p each. You are only allowed water in your water bottle and not squash, to keep your teeth healthy.
